Callum Turner is opening up about his career while taking on the spicy wings of death.
The 36-year-old One Night Only actor made an appearance on Hot Ones with Sean Evans for the Season 30 finale of the show.
During the appearance, he spoke about getting thrown off a horse, breaking into Stamford Bridge for a famous Chelsea match against Barcelona, doing 46 takes for one scene, reaching 46 rowing strokes per minute, and much more.
On getting thrown off a horse while prepping for his role in Glue:
“My character on Glue was a stable hand. And I’d never been on a horse before in my life. So I went up and there’s a stunt family in the UK called the Dents. And they let me come and work on their farm. And I would go and I would muck out, which is what my character was doing, and simultaneously learn how to ride the horse. I don’t know if you’ve ever ridden a horse before. It’s just free, man. I lost concentration with the horse. It started to take over and decided to cut through through the middle of the pen and head towards a jump. The trainer, Sam, then goes, don’t go over the jump. The horse listens. And I came out of the stirrups, luckily, and went over the jump. And I landed on my back. And I remember just laying out. I was looking up at the sky. It was a clear blue sky. And the horse came over and looked over me and went [nicker noise] and walked off. And then Sam came over and she was like, are you OK? Are you OK? And I was like, I think so. Think so. And I had my back brace on and everything so I was fine. Totally bruised. And then she said you know what you gotta do. You gotta get back on the horse. And I did.”
On reaching 46 rowing strokes per minute while filming The Boys in the Boat:
“Long. Long journey. And that 46 strokes per minute, that happened right, right towards the end. So it was a real sense of achievement for all of us because it was a target that we said at the beginning. And so to be able to do it, but to do it together. And I think that’s the thing about rowing is that it’s totally a team sport. And you have to pull your weight. You can’t shy, you can’t hide. And so, for us to do it, we knew that everyone was in sync entirely. And it was, it was exhilarating to be able to do that.”
On doing 46 takes for one scene in Tramps:
“He used number 36, I think. But I remember it was such a technical thing. And we were filming up in Queens and it’s like where the subway goes over ground. And I was running down the stairs and Grace Van Patten, who’s in the movie with me, really technical brilliant shot. And I remember at lunch, because we’d only had the morning to shoot it. Adam Leon, the director, came up to me at lunch and he said we don’t have it. I was like, what do you mean you don’t have it? How can we not have it? We’ve done like 30 takes or something. And he was like, we’re going again. And I’m so glad he did because there was something I think in both Grace and I, it was like a rage, that served the scene. And the determination to go and get it.”
On breaking into Stamford Bridge for a famous Chelsea match against Barcelona:
“I was 13 or 14 and Chelsea were playing Barcelona. And it’s a famous game. Ronaldinho scores this incredible goal. And it was maybe the first half had just kicked off. And we broke into the stadium…and we weren’t the only ones breaking into the stadium. And it was the combination of the exhilaration of breaking into the stadium. And we were right at the very top. And there was maybe 200 other people that had done it. And we’re watching this game. And then we got kicked out. And we broke in again… And I was with my best friend Adam and some other people. And going to watch Barcelona, who were the greatest team, with Ronaldinho, who was the greatest player. And my team playing against them. You know it was like a real sense of pride. But we scored a fourth goal. It was a header. John Terry scored the header. And I just remember it was like carnage. And there was so many people that had broken in. With a bunch of people I didn’t know, yeah.”
