It’s all over before it started.
Tate McRae, 23, and New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes, 25, have officially called it quits, Page Six can confirm — and the split appears to be icier than a hockey rink. We hear the NHL star has been blabbing to pals that he broke up with the “Exes” singer before they had a chance to publicly confirm their romance.
One source told us Hughes ultimately ended the relationship because he started seeing “red flags.” They added he has already moved on and has started dating other people. Meanwhile, sources close to McRae told Page Six it was she who pulled the plug.
The couple first fueled dating rumors when they were spotted out in NYC several times last year. McRae was spotted cheering him on at his New Jersey Devils games, and spies also caught the duo “looking flirty” while having dinner at Anton’s in the West Village last winter.
Hughes reportedly pursued her by sliding into her DMs. After months of the public hypothesizing whether they were an item, a source told Us Weekly in March, “They started casually seeing each other late last year, so it’s still new, but they are exclusively seeing each other.”
“[Tate] thinks [Jack] is a really cool guy and they have been having a lot of fun together,” the source said. “She has been so supportive of his career and has been loving going to the games and cheering him on.”
Rumors of the couple splitting hit fever pitch this week when Variety asked McRae about speculation that she’s a MAGA supporter. Hughes was at the center of the rumor: When he and his fellow Team USA members took a congratulatory phone call from President Donald Trump after winning gold at the Olympics in February, the team laughed as the president made a joke denigrating the women’s hockey team, which had also won gold.
McRae told Variety, “I like to say my piece through organizations I support and the environment that I have on tour.” The story noted some profits from her last tour were donated to LGBTQ youth nonprofit the Trevor Project and to the Global Fund for Women.
“I think it’s pretty obvious what kind of person I am and the things I support. And I hope that my fans can see that through the things that I’m putting my energy towards,” she added.
On Wednesday, the Hollywood trade presented her with the Triple Threat Award at their Power of Young Hollywood event.
Reps for the exes did not comment on their split.
