We’re getting another National Treasure movie!

While appearing on the National Treasure Hunt podcast at a live event in Philadelphia on Friday (August 21), filmmaker Jon Turteltaub confirmed that National Treasure 3 is “happening.”

“I have not said anything before this, but you deserve to have the scoop,” Jon said, (per The Philadelphia Inquirer), noting that the audience was “the first people I have said this out loud to” in public.

He then confirmed that Nicolas Cage will be returning as Ben Gates for the movie. However, Jon noted that there obstacles could still potentially prevent the third movie from happening.

“It’s finally real. Now, it’s Hollywood real, meaning things could happen,” he said. “Nic gets hit by a bus, there’s no National Treasure 3. If I get hit by a bus, there’s probably a National Treasure 3. Welcome to Hollywood.”

The first National Treasure movie was released back in 2004 and also starred Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight, and Harvey Keitel. The sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, hit theaters in 2007, which saw the entire core cast return and brought in Helen Mirren, Ed Harris, and Bruce Greenwood.

In 2022, the spinoff TV series National Treasure: Edge of History premiered on Disney+ and starred Lisette Olivera and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The series was canceled after one season.

Nicolas Cage will next be playing NFL legend John Madden in an upcoming biopic! Watch the trailer here.
