Mina Chan has passed away days before her 26th birthday.
The Japanese K-pop influencer (@sweeter_nk), known especially for being a big fan of the K-pop group ENHYPEN, reportedly died at 25 to due apparently committing suicide during a TikTok livestream.
Police say the incident occurred Wednesday (August 5) while she was livestreaming on TikTok from her residence in Seoul, via The Korea Herald.
Police Are Investigating Mina Chan’s Death
Officers arrived upon getting a concerned report from an acquaintance of the influencer, and found her dead at around 5:33 a.m. on Thursday (August 6).
Police are still investigating the circumstances of her death, per the report.
Mina Faced Backlash Following an ENHYPEN Concert
Mina Chan reportedly attended a U.S. concert last month, and attempted to get band member Sunoo to pass flowers to bandmate Ni-ki, sparking backlash. Ni-ki appeared on a Weverse livestream on July 30 to discuss concert etiquette seemingly in response to the incident, saying: “Everywhere we go there are a few people who really want us to notice them.”
A day later, Mina issued an apology on X: “I feel like my actions ended up taking advantage of Sunoo‘s kindness. ‘I’m truly sorry. I feel so apologetic toward Sunoo and all the Sunoo fans. By attending Enhypen‘s fansigns multiple times, I had deluded myself into thinking I was closer to the members than I actually was. I deeply regret the rude behavior I exhibited in America…to everyone who has supported me as @sweeter_nk until now, thank you so much,” she wrote.
She then appeared to commit suicide on a TikTok livestream days later.
Mina’s Family Shares a Statement Following Her Death
A message appeared on her Instagram Story on Tuesday (August 11), seemingly from her family confirming the news:
We are Mina’s family. We sincerely apologize for the concern and commotion this situation has caused.
On August 9, we were finally able to bring our daughter home. That day would have been her 26th birthday. We are filled with regret that we were unable to fulfill our promise to celebrate her birthday together.
Our daughter was deeply hurt by critical comments posted on social media, which made her feel as though her very existence was being rejected, and she ultimately ended her life. Can you imagine having a beloved family member suddenly disappear from right in front of you?
We hope that more people will think carefully about how the words they post, as well as photos, videos, and everything else they put out into the world, may be received by others.
Finally, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the friends who were close to our daughter, to everyone who supported and encouraged her, and to the friends who helped our family during this time.
Our thoughts are with Mina Chan‘s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.
