Jamie Lee Curtis is looking back at her time on New Girl.
If you didn’t know, the 67-year-old Oscar-winning actress had a recurring role on the Fox comedy series as Joan Day, the mother of Zooey Deschanel‘s character Jess Day.
While promoting her new sitcom Newlyweds, which will premiere this fall on NBC, Jamie admitted that while she loved New Girl, she “hated” filming it.
“I did a single camera, which, I mean — great show, New Girl, very funny — it’s a good show, but doing it is just like doing a movie,” Jamie said during NBCUniversal’s Summer Backlot Experience, per Entertainment Weekly.
“You know, you’ve got a camera crew, and nobody laughs,” she continued. “It’s silent, and it’s awful. For me, awful. Single-camera comedies, for me, not fun.”
Single camera comedy series have become more popular over the last few decades with the success of shows including The Office, Parks & Rec, Modern Family, and Abbott Elementary.
Jamie said that she “begged” her agents to book her on another multi-camera sitcom like Anything But Love, in which she and the late Richard Lewis starred in from 1989 to 1992, rather doing another single-camera comedy.
That’s why she decided to executive produce, and guest star, on the new multi-camera sitcom Newlyweds, which stars real-life couple Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, who married in July 2025.
The new series is described as “a later-in-life love story about a free-spirited woman and a buttoned-up professor who marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship.”
Jamie will be appearing on the show as Tim‘s character’s ex-wife.
Newlyweds premieres October 23 at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC. You can find out more about the show here!
