Moana is not impressing at the box office.
Disney’s live-action remake of the 2016 animated original brought in $43 million in its opening weekend at the North American box office.
While that was enough to put it at No. 1 on the box office, it also lands among the lowest openings of all time among Disney’s live-action remakes, per Variety.
It also faces a steep uphill battle to turn a profit, as it cost an estimated $250 million in production, not including marketing. It was projected to bring in $60-65 million stateside, meaning it underperformed even compared to estimations.
The live-action Moana also brought in $52 million overseas, for a total launch of $95 million.
In Disney’s live-action adaptation of the beloved Oscar-nominated animated adventure, Moana (Catherine Laga’aia) answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.
Last year’s Snow White live-action remake started at $42 million.
Variety also reports that Moana “could lose around $100 million for the studio in its theatrical run.”
