The actress behind the Chanty Beluga character is responding to allegations that she’s an “industry plant.”
For those who don’t know, Chanty Beluga isn’t actually a real person. The character is the brainchild of comedian Courtney O’Donnell.
Courtney is a comedian, writer, and content creator, and she’s got a solo show called Planet Courtney coming to New York later this month. She also released her short film “Going Pop!” in 2025. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she revealed that the Chanty Beluga character was created at 4am while working on the set of the upcoming comedy movie Stephanie Bride to Be.
“We were just totally dicking around, being silly,” she said. “And I said, ‘Hi, my name’s Chanty,’ and we thought that was funny. Then later, I was like, ‘Actually, my name is Chanty Beluga.’ We said the full name, and it seriously went viral in the room. We just could not stop saying Chanty Beluga.”
Allegations made against Chanty Beluga
Someone on TikTok posted a video with a long caption, accusing Chanty Beluga of being an “industry plant.”
“Chanty Beluga is 100000% a corporate industry plant meme btw. She posted her first video like what… 2 weeks ago? And she already has a VERIZON ad, Washington Square Park lookalike contest, Harry Daniels video and a Perfectly Imperfect article. Big brands can’t rely on true creators anymore to advertise with such as Jools Lebron who could be mentally unstable and tarnish their deal at any moment so they planted a safe cis straight white girl who is easily marketable to sell their products. The joke of ‘hi I’m (insert funny name)’ has already been done, so why is this one instantly blowing up and receiving brand deals before it’s even fully gone mainstream? WAKE UPPPP,” user @miissmisery posted.
Chanty Beluga responds to the allegations
Chanty herself responded.
“I literally am a comedian and have been posting for 5 years and this is the first thing of mine that has popped off,” she wrote in the comments section.
