Sarah Shahi‘s time starring in the Netflix series Sex/Life impacted her life in a significant way.

The 46-year-old actress visits Amanda Hirsch‘s Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast this week and talks about how being on the series motivated to get divorced, via an exclusive clip shared by People.

On the show, Sarah played Billie, a struggling housewife feeling unfulfilled in her life and marriage.

In real life, the Paradise star felt parallels to the character. She had been married to Steve Howey at the time and they divorced in 2020.

“You know, divorce is never something that happens overnight, but [Billie] definitely was — she pushed it for sure,” Sarah shared. “I gathered strength in her, unlike any character I had ever played, you know, and it was just such an interesting moment in my life where the stars took over in a way that was really divine.”

“I felt like I was being possessed by this character, Billie, and I was finally having the guts to say and do all the things that I wanted to do for years before,” she continued.

Later, Sarah revealed she “lost friends” at the time.

“The amount of judgment I got [for] getting the divorce from people who honestly were just unhappy in their own relationships, but they decided to stick it out, and they thought I should do the same,” she added. “And it’s like — that’s not what we’re here for. We’re here to have fun and be happy.”

Earlier this month, she opened up about why she and Adam Demos, her Sex/Life co-star, broke up.
