On Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 8:59 a.m., Niagara Regional Police officers and paramedics were called to a residence near Crowland Avenue and York Street for what was initially reported as a medical emergency.
When officers arrived, they discovered the home’s front door had been forced open and found a young child with serious injuries. The child was rushed to an out-of-region hospital and remains in stable condition.
A CRIME INSIDE THE FAMILY HOME
Investigators say that sometime between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, an intruder defeated the lock on the front door and entered the home while the parents were unaware. Inside, the child was allegedly sexually assaulted.
Uniform patrol officers immediately secured the scene and launched a neighbourhood canvass. Surveillance footage obtained by police led to the swift identification of a suspect.
SUSPECT UNDER ARREST
Police have arrested Daniel SENECAL, 25, of Welland. He has been charged with the following offences:
• Aggravated Sexual Assault on a Person Under 16
• Assault
• Assault / Choking
• Break & Enter and Commit – Dwelling House
• Sexual Interference with a Person Under 16
SENECAL remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in bail court today (Monday, September 1, 2025) via video link at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse
in St. Catharines.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
The investigation is now being led by detectives from the Child Abuse Unit, with support from the Sexual Assault Unit and Forensic Services Unit.
