“I don’t like to whine, but [director] [Stanley Donen] later shared publicly that Gene was very dismissive of me during the film,” she wrote. “It’s hard to go to work when the chemistry is absent. I think it’s fair to say that Gene was downright rude.”
Regarding Martin, Liza details a secret affair they had that started on the set of their 1977 movie New York, New York, while they were both married to other people.
She claims they both had “volcanic tempers” and things became intense when she and her husband at the time, Jack Haley Jr., ran into The Godfather director and he berated her over an affair she was also having with Russian ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov.
“How can you do this to me. How can you do this to me!” she says Martin yelled at her.
Liza says drugs were a factor in her and Martin‘s relationship.
“As we filmed, Marty became a heavier and heavier user of cocaine. It seemed that it was no longer recreational for either of us. It was day and night. On the set, in between takes, and when we went out in the evening,” she claimed.
Liza continued, “We were constant companions and I was right there beside him. Line by line, Marty claimed the drug helped his creative juices. Sure it did. Or is that just one more fabulous lie you tell yourself when you’re in the grip of substance use?”
She also called their affair the result of “amour fou,” a “French term for a passionate relationship that becomes a self destructive obsession.”
Martin was married to his second wife Julia Cameron at the time of the supposed affair.
