John Lithgow should probably make some room to add another award to his collection as it appears he’s going to be a Tony Award frontrunner thanks to his performance in Giant.
The acclaimed actor is playing Roald Dahl in the new play, which just arrived on Broadway after an Oliver Award-winning run in London’s West End.
Lithgow walked the red carpet alongside co-stars Aya Cash, Rachael Stirling, Elliot Levey, Stella Everett, and David Manis at the opening night performance on Monday (March 23) at the Music Box Theatre in New York City.
Giant takes place in one afternoon and deals with the fallout of author Roald Dahl’s controversial anti-Semitic remarks.
Deadline wrote, “Lithgow’s remarkable Olivier Award-winning performance… is a terrifically nuanced affair, as indeed are Rosenblatt’s play and the note-perfect direction of Nicholas Hytner. Any cast of costars would be deemed successful merely for holding its own, and this one does so much more than that. Giant, thrilling and abrasive, is full of rewards.”
Other opening night guests included Sarah Paulson, Sara Bareilles and Joe Tippett, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita, Rebecca Hall and Morgan Spector, Bobby Cannavale, Phillipa Soo, and Ragtime actor Rodd Cyrus, who is dating Stella.
Aya also received support from the cast of her upcoming TV series Vought Rising.
