The decision to release Decarlos Brown Jr., the suspect in the m*rder of Zarutska without cash bail – is being blasted by critics who say the judicial leniency shown to this career criminal is to blame for the death of Zarutska.
Critics also point to no-cash bail policies, DEI policies and DEI judges.

January 19 – Judge Teresa Stokes released Brown on a no-cash bail bond – allowing him to go free – after being charged with misusing the 911 system, where he called 911 claiming a “man-made material” controlled his body.
July – A forensic mental health evaluation was ordered to assess Brown’s mental capacity for the 911 misuse case.
The evaluation never happened, possibly reportedly due to “resource shortages”
Brown Jr., has a lengthy history of criminal behavior.
2012 – Brown was convicted of assault on a female in Mecklenburg County, receiving a probation sentence. The case involved physical violence
2014 –Brown was arrested and convicted for shoplifting. He received a fine and community service.
2016 – Brown was charged with felony breaking and entering, convicted, and served a short jail sentence followed by probation.
2018 – Brown was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, a felony charge, in Mecklenburg County. He pleaded guilty to a reduced misdemeanor charge and was sentenced to time served and probation.
2020 – Brown was convicted of possessing stolen goods and received a suspended sentence with community service

2022 – Brown was arrested for resisting arrest during a traffic stop, convicted, and fined.
2023 – Brown faced charges for trespassing and creating a public disturbance. He was convicted and ordered to pay fines and complete community service.
2024 –Brown was arrested for assaulting a transit officer in Charlotte. He was convicted and sentenced to 30 days in jail, with credit for time served.
It’s not clear whether Brown completed his community service or not, however no violations were reported.
