Carey Mulligan is the latest star to join the cast of the upcoming film adaptation of The Bell Jar, which will star Billie Eilish in the lead role.
The project has not yet been officially announced by Focus Features, but Variety confirms that Billie will be playing Esther Greenwood in the adaptation of Sylvia Plath‘s famous novel. The movie will mark her feature film acting debut, though she’s already a two-time Oscar winner thanks to her music.
Carey has reportedly been cast as her mother, Mrs. Greenwood.
While his casting hasn’t been confirmed or denied at this point, it has also been rumored that Heated Rivalry actor Connor Storrie will be in the movie. His casting was leaked by a museum where the movie was being filmed in Canada.
Sarah Polley, who won an Oscar for her Women Talking screenplay, is set to write and direct the upcoming movie. The story follows “a young woman’s descent into mental illness amid the stifling societal expectations for women in the 1950s.”
Plath published the novel in 1963 under a pseudonym, shortly before she died by suicide.
