Lindsey Graham‘s sister Darline Graham Nordone is taking over for her late brother in the U.S. Senate.

The allocation is temporary, per AP News, and comes after his sudden and unexpected death over the weekend at the age of 71. Nordone will be the first woman to represent the state of South Carolina in the Senate and will serve out the remaining months Graham‘s term, expiring in January.

“It is such an honor,” Nordone said during a news conference held at the Statehouse on Monday (July 13). “Lindsey has always been there for me. And now, I will be there for him.”

Nordone grew up with Lindsey in Central, South Carolina. She has spent almost three decades working as the Commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind to aid those with low vision in finding assistance and employment and serves on the South Carolina State Workforce Development Board, along with being the president-elect of the National Council of State Agencies for the Blind, per WCNC.

She has not previously held public office but has been involved with her brother’s political life throughout the years. Her interim term in the Senate will run through January 3, 2027.

How did Lindsey Graham die?

The preliminary cause of death was shared on Sunday, July 12, with findings saying the Senator died from Aortic Dissection due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease.

Emergency crews responded to his Washington, D.C. home on Saturday night, where he was said to have passed away from “a brief and sudden illness.”
