Backrooms is huge already.
The Kane Parsons-directed horror movie just opened at over $81 million in its debut weekend at the box office, resulting in the biggest opening in A24‘s history.
The 20-year-old director is now the youngest filmmaker in history to land at No. 1 at the domestic box office, following Josh Trank, who went to No. 1 in 2012 with Chronicle at the age of 27.
After just one day, the movie shattered film studio A24’s record for biggest opening weekend, which was previously held by 2024’s Civil War with $25.5 million.
Backrooms was made for a reported $10 million.
The movie centers around a failed architect (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who stumbles across an endless series of rooms in the furniture store he manages.
Renate Reinsve also stars, alongside Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell. The movie is based on Kane‘s viral Backrooms series on YouTube, which gained massive attention online for its unsettling liminal space horror concept.
