A sequel to the smash-hit movie Michael is in the works and Lionsgate’s main executive has revealed some details about what fans can expect.
The first movie in the Michael franchise charts the beginning of his career as a child singer in The Jackson 5 and eventually launching a solo career, much to the dismay of his father. The movie ends just as Michael Jackson is reaching the height of his career and there’s lots of his life that can still be explored.
Michael‘s real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson plays him in the movie and has received tons of acclaim for his performance.
What will happen in the Michael sequel?
Lionsgate Studios Motion Picture Chair Adam Fogelson is opening up about the “progress” being made in the development of the sequel.
During a call about the studio’s quarterly earnings, Fogelson said, “All the conversations that we’ve been having with all of the appropriate parties continue to go exceptionally well, and I would say that there is a ton of incredibly entertaining Michael Jackson story, and much of the biggest and most popular parts of his music catalog that were not touched upon in the first film.”
The movie will cover different parts of Michael‘s life, even moments that were part of the first film’s timeline.
Deadline reports that he added, “We can go forwards and backwards in telling this story. There are so many other events that happened, even in the time frame of the original movie, that weren’t touched upon. So we’re very, very confident that we’ve got an incredibly entertaining movie that will appeal once again to a global audience as the pieces come together.”
So many scenes were shot for the first movie that didn’t make it to the final cut. Lionsgate plan on using some of this footage for the sequel!
Fogelson said that “25% to 30% of a second movie [is] already shot from the prior production activity, and so obviously that will have some benefit ultimately. But we’ll make sure we make a big and satisfying movie for a global audience once again, so I wouldn’t want to quantify exactly what that’s going to look like. But undoubtedly that 25% to 30% will be material.”
