Steven Spielberg appears to be weighing in on Timothée Chalamet’s controversial comments about ballet and opera.

The acclaimed director spoke at a keynote conversation at SXSW recently and he made a comment about how much he values streaming and working with Netflix, but for him, “the real experience comes when we can influence a community to congregate in a strange, dark space where all of us are strangers.”

He continued, “At the end of a really good movie experience, we are all united with a whole bunch of feelings that we walk into the daylight with, or into the nighttime with. And there’s nothing like that. It happens in movies, and in concerts,” he said, per Variety.

“And it happens in ballet and opera, by the way,” Steven said.

When he said it, the outlet reports that the audience broke out in cheers and laughter, prompting him to add, “And we want that to be sustained. We want that to go forever.”

The Jaws director is just one of many stars now who has publicly criticized the Marty Supreme star for what he said, such as Nathan Lane, who also named Matthew McConaughey in his criticism.

But others, like opera singer Andrea Boceli, offered Timothée more of an olive branch, inviting him to learn more about the art form.
